Monthly Macro Review - April 2025

Macro at a glance

Canada's Liberal Party, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, secured 168 of 343 electoral districts, up from 153 previously, though falling short of majority control against the Conservative Party. The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, increased their seats from 120 to 144. Carney pledged to maintain tariffs against American products while reducing interprovincial trade barriers and pursuing European market opportunities.

April 2 marked a pivotal economic moment as Trump's tax initiatives triggered global reverberations. Despite immediate suspension due to bond market pressure, the tariff announcements initiated significant trade tensions. The U.S. enacted protectionist measures targeting job preservation and deficit reduction while encouraging domestic investment.

Escalating trade warfare between China and the United States intensified dramatically. Initial reciprocal tariffs escalated to "104% tax on all Chinese goods" by April 9, with China responding at 84%. Hours later, China imposed 125% tariffs while the U.S. countered with 145%, resulting in a 60% decline in freight shipments. Analysts predicted consequent shortages and retail price increases.

Market sentiment turned decidedly negative. The S&P 500 experienced "its worst performance in the first 100 days of a presidential term since Gerald Ford, with an 8% decline." Currency weakness and consumer anxiety mounted alongside trade conflict escalation.

One Sector, One Insight

Basic Materials and Energy:

Elliott Management accumulated significant energy sector positions. On April 9, it disclosed a $2.5 billion Phillips 66 stake, demanding business restructuring and board expansion. BP faced parallel pressure, with Elliott's 5% position requiring operational refocusing, cost reductions, and elevated cash flow targets—demanding $20 billion by 2027 versus current $14 billion projections.

Consumption and General Public Services:

Barry Callebaut encountered substantial headwinds during the 2024-2025 fiscal period. Sales surged 63% to 7.29 billion CHF, yet net profit contracted 60% to 30.5 million CHF. Cocoa prices escalated 95% annually, necessitating a 2 billion CHF bond issuance to maintain liquidity.

Financial Services:

Mediobanca announced a €6.3 billion exchange acquisition of Banca Generali on April 28, financed through Generali stake divestiture. The transaction responds to shareholder tensions involving Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone and Delfin, who challenge current governance while potentially supporting Monte dei Paschi di Siena's hostile Mediobanca bid.

Healthcare:

UnitedHealth Group reported quarterly revenues of $109.6 billion, below $111.6 billion forecasts, alongside downward 2025 guidance. Medicare Advantage medical costs exceeded expectations, triggering 17% share price decline that pressured sector performance.

Industrials:

Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda proposed a ¥6 trillion ($42 billion) transaction acquiring Toyota Industries, its largest subsidiary. This restructuring aims to simplify ownership architecture and consolidate family control over the world's premier automaker.

Technology and Network Equipment:

Google confronted landmark antitrust litigation on April 28. Department of Justice prosecutors sought structural remedies against alleged search and advertising monopolies, arguing partnerships with Apple, Mozilla, and Verizon—involving $1.9 trillion in annual arrangement commitments—inhibited competitive innovation.

The Stock of the Month

MicroStrategy surged 31.3% in April, reflecting Bitcoin market sentiment more substantially than operational fundamentals. The enterprise's positioning as the largest corporate cryptocurrency holder attracted speculative capital allocation.
